Nuggets-Knicks Melee

Current Music: "99 Red Balloons" by Goldfinger

The big story of tonight is the brawl between the Denver Nuggets and the New York Knicks. I am a big Nuggets fan, so you might be able to guess which way my bias leans. That said, here's how I think the NBA should react.

Mardy Collins: 20 game suspension. He got the ball rolling with his fall that he may have been called for an illegal horse collar tackle on J.R. Smith if it were football, much less basketball.

J.R. Smith: 1-2 game suspension. While it is still inexcusable to react that way, I can't say that I wouldn't have reacted the same way. There was clearly intent by Collins to injure him. He also appeared to be trying to walk away when the Knicks' Nate Robinson tackled him into the stands.

Nate Robinson: 5-7 game suspension. He went after J.R. Smith after things were starting to settle down.

Carmelo Anthony: 5-7 game suspension. People are talking about a 30 game suspension for Anthony, but that is ridiculous. He should get whatever Robinson gets. After Robinson's attack on Smith, Anthony retaliated by punching him in the face.

Isiah Thomas: suspended for the remainder of the season. In the postgame press conference, Thomas blamed the melee not on the hard foul by Collins, but the fact that Denver was running up the score against them. According to ESPN, Thomas told Anthony shortly before the brawl something to the effect of 'you had better stay out of the paint for the rest of the game, or you'll see what happens.' If Thomas did in fact make that thinly veiled threat, he has no business coaching anywhere. He should be fired anyway for being a terribly incompetent coach, but especially after this.

Current Music: "Shadow on the Sun" by Audioslave

I am facing an ethical dilemmma. My roommate's girlfriend told me the other day that she wants to break up with him for me. I am neither friends nor enemies with my roommate, and I really like this girl a lot. Should I follow my heart, or should I avoid an awkward/hostile roommate situation?

I went over to her apartment yesterday, and when she opened up the door, she leapt into my arms, and we definitely had a moment. Any ideas on what I should do?

Time for Plummer to Sit

Current Music: "Voice of the Voiceless" by Rage Against the Machine

Last night's Broncos loss to the San Diego Chargers was a good example of fan's love-hate relationship with quarterback Jake Plummer. Plummer made a few great passes last night, but when crunch time came, he fumbled once and threw an interception. He tries to make plays that he is not good enough to make.

I understand that Mike Shanahan has hitched his wagon to Jake Plummer, and a coach should defend his players. However, there comes a time when a coach must make a decision for the best interests of his team. That time is now, and Shanahan needs to put Jay Cutler in, if for no other reason than to kick Plummer's ass and motivate him to take his game to the next level. If Jake the Snake can't do that, he should be riding the pine.

The Broncos have a solid running game, an outstanding reciever in Javon Walker, a great defense, the greatest corner in the league (Champ Bailey), and the best kicker in the league (Jason Elam). There is no reason why the Broncos shouldn't be Super Bowl contenders, and Jake Plummer is holding them back.

Ted Haggard

Current Music: "Southbound Pachyderm" by Primus

As most of you have probably heard, Rev. Ted Haggard has been exposed for having a sexual tryst with a male prostitute, as well as buying methamphetamine from him. Now Haggard will be undergoing a "spiritual rehabilitation."

This is exactly why most gays don't like evangelicals. Evangelical Christians treat homosexuality as a drug addiction or a mental illness. I really do feel bad for Ted Haggard. He has risen to power in a group that rejects who Haggard really is, and he has had to suppress his sexuality in order to keep doing what he loves. Now he must continue to suppress his sexuality, and must subject himself to periodic polygraph tests to "save his soul."

I live in Colorado Springs, Colorado, arguably the most anti-gay town in America. Haggard's New Life Church as well as Focus on the Family call the Springs home, and have been very effective at pushing their religious conservatism on the community. Evangelicals are learning the wrong lesson from this scandal. Though it is ironic, and I admit, hilarious, Ted Haggard should use this scandal as an opportunity to teach his congregation that being gay doesn't have any impact on whether or not someone is a good person or not.

Dubya Quote of the Day

Current Music: "Polly" by Nirvana

It's been awhile since I have done the Dubya quotes...this one is bad, even for Bushie.

"This morning my administration released the budget numbers for fiscal 2006. These budget numbers are not just estimates; these are the actual results for the fiscal year that ended February the 30th."

An Open Letter to House Speaker Dennis Hastert

Current Music: "Kill the Poor" by Dead Kennedys

Dear Mr. Speaker,

Let me start with you, Mr. Hastert. You are a monster. You chose to protect someone who you knew to be taking advantage of minors in a sexual manner over the internet and did NOTHING. If I were a judge, I would make you serve the maximum possible sentence in a maximum security prison for protecting a pedophile and abuse of power. I would also make you speak to a group of sexually abused children and force you to explain to those children why you helped protect a pedophile for political gain. If there is a hell, may you be condemned to an eternity of having pineapples shoved up your ass.

Giving Teachers Guns?

Current Music: "Hadda Be Playing on the Jukebox" by Rage Against the Machine

While doing some channel surfing, I came across a Fox News graphic asking, "should teachers have guns in the classroom?" My response was, "hell no, dumbass!"

When I was in school, I was one of those "Ritalin kids" that drove teachers insane. I have no doubt that I had a handful of teachers who probably would have shot me if they had access to a gun.

I generally have a lot of respect for teachers beacuse I know exactly what they go through, since I put them through it. But if teachers had guns, we would start hearing about teachers with anger management issues that flip their shit and decide to shoot up their class.

Another School Shooting

Current Music: "The Wanton Song" by Led Zeppelin

When I turned on the news this morning, I saw that there had been another school shooting at an Amish school in Pennsylvania. I'm now patiently waiting for the finger pointing to begin, as happened after Columbine. I was in 8th grade when the shooting at Columbine happened, and the scapegoats du jour were Marilyn Manson, Rammstein, and The Matrix (which had not been released to theaters yet).

I'm not one to look for one single cause of school violence, because there isn't one. If one chooses to look at the media as a factor, it is only fair to condemn the most violent show on TV, which is the news. For one thing, a disturbed kid may see the sensationalism on TV and see it as a way to make a statement. Granted, this kid was Amish, so TV violence probably had nothing to do with this incident.

I think the biggest reason for school violence is that middle school and high school suck balls for almost everyone. Some kids just aren't equipped with the coping skills to deal with all the bullshit that comes with adolescence, and sometimes tragedies such as this occur.
